Support Your Body Through Every Stage of Reproductive Wellness

Reproductive health is a pivotal piece of our overall health. When bodies are highly stressed or undernourished, our reproductive system sends a message that we are not ready to procreate, disrupting normal hormone function which cascades into a variety of symptoms.

In pregnancy, our bodies undergo physically demanding transformations. Acupuncture keeps you strong to grow smoothly and quicken healing time. Postpartum, while you're busy keep up with all the fast paced changes of baby and toddler growth, acupuncture supports your nervous system and adaptability.

Acupuncture can help with missing periods, painful sex, PCOS, endometriosis, hot flashes, nightsweats, menstrual cramps, cyclic brain fog, mood swings, recurring UTI's, short cycles, heavy bleeding, back pain, and recurrent miscarriages.

In East Asian medicine, we use the menstrual cycle as a measurement tool for every female-bodied person. Without invasion to the body, menstruation tells us about the body's blood volume, blood quality, hormone levels, strength of digestion, and stress levels.

In addition to asking about menstrual cycle, we also encourage patients to get hormonal labwork done or take basal body temperature. Both of these methods are minimally invasive and give a lot of information. While acupuncturists are not able to order labs, if you are interested in getting labwork done, we are happy to recommend what labs to ask your doctor for and to review your results with you during a lab analysis.

When we work on cycle issues, it's ideal to see patients during every phase of your cycle. In only 5 days, your period is over. In a 28 day cycle, you'd have less than a week before you enter your fertile window, then ovulation, then post ovulation. To support each of these phases, we recommend treatments 2 times per week.

Your Cycle

Here are a few things to start writing down to keep awareness of your menstrual health:

The first date of each period. The number of days your period lasts. The color of your bleed, amount, and whether there are clots or mucous. Which days you have pain. Do you get soft or watery stools that coincide with your period? Do you get headaches or brain fog that coincides with your period? Do you get acne or anger that coincides with your period?

Fertility: Male & Female

Whether you haven't gotten pregnant yet or have had miscarriages, acupuncture can benefit both the male and female reproductive systems. We help people at any stage of the fertility journey; trying naturally, working with your RE for medicated IUI, or undergoing IVF.

The journey can feel like an uphill climb and we understand the range of emotions that come up for many of our patients. The anger at your own body, the sadness that takes you at random, or the fear and anxiety when the answer feels so far away. We are here for the whole journey; not only treating your physical body, but supporting you emotionally as well.

For female anatomies, we want to see you during every phase of your cycle. In only 5 days, your period is over. In a 28 day cycle, you'd have less than a week before you enter your fertile window, then ovulation, then post ovulation. To support each of these phases, we ask to see patients 2 times per week.

Prenatal Care

Pregnancy, what a beautiful and uncomfortable time!

"I'm so tired and I haven't even told people I'm pregnant!" If this is you, we understand. Your body is doing A LOT long before you start to show, sometimes before it has even sunk in that you're pregnant. The transformation your body and baby make through the entire 40ish week journey is awe-inspiring and exhausting!

Much like many journeys in life, pregnancy is amazing as a picture, but as a movie, there can be ups, downs, speed bumps and potholes, with a sprinkling of beautiful smooth road. We are here to support you throughout this challenging and amazing transition into parenthood.

Gestational Diabetes

If you've done the sugar test and results came back borderline or positive for gestational diabetes, there are definitely some diet changes that should be made. Sometimes these labs come back high even though you are already eating healthy, from there we may look at some lifestyle modifications and use acupuncture to help your body digest, absorb, and excrete what it should. Remember that diabetes is NOT black or white. It is about making sure your body processes your food as well as it can during this pivotal time and reducing blood glucose spikes for both you and baby's overall health. Gestational diabetes increases risk of diabetes following the birth, so good health habits are significant.

Nausea / Low Appetite

Nausea and a new level of fatigue are among the most popular complaints in the first trimester of pregnancy. Even if you are not running to the trash can to throw up like in the movies, if you are feeling nauseated for multiple hours in a day, it is worth coming in to get treatment. For many, acupuncture and herbal medicine can help reduce the all day nausea within a few days of treatment.

Labor Preparation

Acupuncture prepares the body to open the pelvis, soften the cervix, dilate smoothly, and strengthen muscles for the upcoming uterine and pelvic floor workout.

Acupuncture also increases circulation which promotes healing for the postpartum phase, whether your delivery is vaginal or via c-section.

Pain During Pregnancy

Sciatica, low back pain, and carpal tunnel are common during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy. While not everyone experiences these issues, targeted acupuncture can help reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and enhance flexibility to alleviate discomfort.

Acupuncture for Postpartum Healing

The postpartum years are such a pivotal time in life, but most western care stops after childbirth when the journey is only midway through! The months and years following birth bring an array of challenges for the body and mind. Pelvic healing from birth, supporting milk production, postpartum depression and anxiety, back and neck pain from carrying a baby or toddler, lack of sleep, and low energy are among the list of common complaints from new and not-so-new moms.

Accumulated sleep loss and keeping up with the demands of being a parent affects our wellbeing and longevity. Whether you are 1 day postpartum or 3 years postpartum and still notice thin hair, low energy, pelvic pain, or urinary incontinence, acupuncture can help.

At Rivers of Qi, we know that everyone has a different amount of help, and there is no pressure to come in immediately. As soon as you can, come in, we help with healing from delivery, supporting your milk supply, reducing postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety symptoms.
